A Golden Retriever stencil should look soft, not shaggy. The trick is to keep the feathered ears and the friendly open mouth while leaving out the thousands of fur strands. Upload a photo of your Golden, choose AI likeness, and the stencil keeps the wavy ear edge as a few bold curves you can actually cut.

What makes a Golden Retriever stencil look like a Golden Retriever
Goldens are recognized by three things: the feathered ears that hang below the jaw, the kind eyes set in a broad skull, and that open-mouth smile with the tongue showing. A good stencil keeps all three and lets the rest of the coat go. The ear feathering becomes three or four wavy cuts instead of a hundred thin ones.
The light coat needs contrast to come through. AI likeness draws the inside of the ears, the shadow under the chin and the mouth line as dark shapes, so the glow outlines a happy dog rather than a pale blob. This is the stencil in the demo at the top of the page.
Photo tips for a Golden Retriever stencil
- Use a photo with the mouth open; the smile is half of what makes a Golden look like a Golden.
- Avoid bright sun on a light coat; it washes out the ear feathering.
- A dark or green background (grass, a hedge) separates the coat from the backdrop.
Carving a Golden Retriever pumpkin
- Carve the tongue and eyes first, then the mouth line, then the ear waves.
- Use a small saw with a fine blade for the wavy ear edge and saw slowly around each curve.
- Print Large on a 10 inch pumpkin if you want the ear feathering to show.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep the fur from making the stencil too hard?
Choose Medium in AI likeness. It keeps the ear waves and the smile but drops the fine strands that would be too thin to carve.
Does a puppy photo work?
Yes. Puppy faces are rounder with shorter ears; the stencil will look younger, which many people prefer for a first carving.
Can I see my Golden stencil on my own pumpkin first?
Yes. After the stencil is made, use Carve it on my pumpkin to see it carved and lit on a photo of your pumpkin.
