About the happy pumpkin face stencil

Round eyes and one big curved smile: the happy pumpkin face is the friendliest design in the faces collection, and the one little kids pick most often. It swaps the sharp triangles of the classic face for soft circles, so it looks cheerful rather than spooky once it glows.

All three openings are separate and none of them has an island inside, so there is nothing to bridge. The only care point is the smile: it is a long, thin crescent, and its two tips are where the pumpkin wall gets narrow.

Tips for this design

  • Use an apple corer or a large drill bit for perfectly round eyes.
  • Keep at least 1 cm of skin between the smile tips and the eyes.
  • Lovely on small pumpkins for a row of happy faces on the steps.

Carving the happy pumpkin face stencil

Round shapes are where kitchen knives fail and small kit saws shine. Saw the circles with short strokes while slowly turning the pumpkin, not the blade. The smile is a long crescent: its middle can be cut quickly, but slow down for the last two centimetres at each tip, where the wall between smile and cheek is thinnest.

Cut both eyes first, then the smile, starting at its widest point in the middle and sawing out toward each tip. Full transfer guide.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting the saw blade in the circles, which tears the edges.
  • Making the smile wider than the eyes are apart, so it wraps around the pumpkin.
  • Removing the circle plugs by pushing them in, which chips the inner edge.

Make it yours

Swap the round eyes for your kids’ initials or carve a whole family of happy faces, one per pumpkin. For something more personal, turn a photo of your smiling kid into an AI stencil and line it up next to this one.

Happy Pumpkin Face stencil questions

Can young kids carve the happy pumpkin face?

Kids can tape the stencil and poke the outline; an adult should cut the smile. It is one of the safest first designs.

How do I keep the smile from drooping?

Saw slowly at the tips and leave the skin above the smile at least 1.5 cm thick so the top lip does not sag.

Can I use a drill instead of a saw for the eyes?

Yes. A large spade bit or hole saw makes clean circles; finish the smile with a small saw.

Which pumpkin works best?

A round pumpkin with a flat front gives the friendliest look.

Is it good for school carving events?

Yes. It is simple, cheerful and works on small pumpkins.
