About the toothy grin face stencil

Crescent eyes and a jagged grin full of pointed teeth give this face a mischievous look that sits halfway between happy and scary. The crescent eyes make it look like it is laughing at a joke you were not told.

Even with all those teeth there are no loose pieces: each tooth is a point of skin that belongs to the upper or lower lip, so the design needs no bridges. What it does need is patience, because a zigzag edge has a lot of corners.

Tips for this design

  • Sharp corners come from two straight cuts that meet, not from twisting the blade.
  • A slightly flat-faced pumpkin keeps the teeth from looking stretched.
  • Shave the inside of each tooth thinner for a brighter glow along the zigzag.

Carving the toothy grin face stencil

The zigzag mouth is cut as a series of short straight lines. Insert the saw at a tooth tip, cut down to the next valley, pull the saw out and re-enter for the next line. Turning the saw at a corner widens the cut and rounds the teeth, which loses the jagged look that makes this face work.

Cut the crescent eyes first. Then saw the grin one tooth at a time, pulling the saw out and re-entering at every corner instead of turning it. Full transfer guide.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the tooth points by turning the saw.
  • Making every tooth the same size; a little variation looks better.
  • Cutting the crescent eyes too thin to glow.

Toothy Grin Face stencil questions

Is the toothy grin harder than the classic face?

A little. It is still rated Easy, but the zigzag mouth takes about 10 extra minutes.

Can I make the teeth longer?

Print the Large size; the teeth scale up evenly and are easier to cut.

How many teeth does the grin have?

Enough to read as jagged from a distance; you can skip a few small ones to make it easier.

Can I make it scarier?

Make the eyes narrower and tilt them down toward the nose.

What saw should I use?

A small serrated kit saw with a thin blade handles the zigzag best.
